K is for...

KINDERGARTEN!!!

Yes, it's official.  Juliana is in school!  She is now a kindergartner at Reba O. Steck Elementary School.  Last Monday, Joe took her to the Meet the Teacher event in the afternoon.  After waiting in a crazy long line to get in, they found her classroom, met Mrs. Webber (briefly), found her seat, looked around the classroom and the building, put some supplies away and then went outside to meet some other students and enjoy ice cream treats:)

Look at the gift I made for Mrs. Webber! We glued rulers to a wooden box and filled it with extra supplies!

Then, on Thursday, Joe & I took the morning off of work to accompany her to her first day of kindergarten.  The parents attended WITH the students for just a 1/2 hour time block (broken up by last names).  While we filled out some paperwork and dealt with the remaining supplies, Mrs. Webber called all the kindergartners down to the floor to listen to the story The Kissing Hand.  Then they did a pre-writing activity where she recorded their answers to the prompt "I like..."  We were wary to see what Juliana might come up with, but she said "swimming and dancing."  Seems about right:)  Then the day was over!

Mrs. Webber has a clip chart just like Mommy!

She put my box on her desk!!!!!!

The "easy button" everyone got to push:)

 she wasn't being very cooperative!

Then, Friday, she rode the Goddard School bus to Steck and stayed ALL day!  When we asked her what she did, she pretty much said, "I ate snack and had lunch and saw Talon (our neighbor),"  but her teacher was kind enough to fill in the missing details in an email that evening:)  Here's what she had to say:

Can you believe that your child completed his/her first day of kindergarten?  I was so very PROUD of them all.  They worked so hard to learn the rules and routines.  You might have asked your child, "What did you do in school today?"  If they said, "Nothing", what they really meant was....
  • Say the Pledge
  •  Learn about the "home folder" (which came home today-- please look for an orange note about the folder, a note about safe snacks, a note about Time for Kids , a note about wearing colors next week-red for Monday, Letter S work and maybe a coloring sheet)
  • Read the story Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten
  • Jolly Phonics sound for S
  • Whole Body Listening rules
  • Snack
  • the Quiet Attention Signal
  • Recess (and the playground rules)
  • Calendar
  • Lunch
  • Quiet time-read, color or relax to regroup for a few minutes
  • Read the book David Goes to School  and talked about rules
  • Pattern Block Exploration
  • Talk about the number one
  • Play at choice centers with friends-blocks, legos, house, puppets, etc.
  • P.E
  • Draw about our day
  • Made new friends
Your child had a busy day.  I really enjoyed today and look forward to more fun and learning next week. Have a good weekend!  Cindy Webber

Katie, Brian, Madelyn and the 4 of us went out to Carabba's for dinner to celebrate back to school for all!

We're so proud of you, Juliana!  Good luck this year.
