Winter Activities

We haven't had much of a winter here in IL, but this weekend we have finally gotten a somewhat decent snowfall.  We ventured out yesterday (in freezing cold temperatures!) to have some fun in what might be our only snow of the season!  We ventured out to the sledding hill near our house with Katie, Brian and Madelyn.

Juliana had a BLAST sledding this year (in the past she has been somewhat fearful)!  Connor was a little scared of going so fast but he wanted to keep going, and by the end he was certainly asking for more!  The hill was pretty bare, so it was a bit like off-roading!  Connor's favorite part was going through the "oozy mud" (a reference to Going on a Bear Hunt) which is what he called the rocky/grassy area!  While we had fun, the day was not without incidents!

*Madelyn was NOT a fan of sledding by any means :(
*Katie and Joe are still sore today from all the bumps
*Joe ran over his finger!
*our sleds...well, let's just say they aren't quite functional as sleds anymore!

Here are a couple of pictures from our adventures:

A couple weeks ago, we took the kids ice skating with Grandma and Grandpa G.  That outing did not go exactly as I had envisioned it either!  We had bought Connor a pair of double-blade over-the-boot skates since no skating rinks have skates small enough for him.  When we got there, though, we discovered that we only had ONE of the skates!  (the other turned up at home-it had just fallen out of the box). We tried just taking him out on the ice in his boots and he was having fun, but then we got busted.  They said they didn't want him getting hurt so he couldn't be on the ice in boots (ok, the policy is fine, but the reasoning????  he was MUCH safer in boots holding our hands than he was on skates that were way too big!) So he ended up having to rent in a size WAY too big! Let's just say that he did NOT enjoy the experience.   Not to mention the fact that it was PACKED, close to lunch/nap and far away!  Juliana was really scared at first even though she has been skating before.  Eventually we were able to snag a metal bar thing-y to serve as a skating buddy.  Then she was loving it and totally independent!  She wants to go back:)  I'm still hoping to get Connor back using his own skates.
